LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY: Special issue on writing

Language Learning and Technology has delivered a special issue on Technology and Learning to write (Vol. 12 n. 2, June 2008).

The articles deal with the influence of Corpus Technology on L2 Academic writing , asynchronous forums in EAP, raising students’ awareness of cross-cultural contrastive rhetoric via an e-Learning course and pedagogical practices and perceived learning effectiveness in EFL writing classes.

As usual, there is an interesting article on emerging technologies related to the topic covered by this special issue, writing. Goldwin Jones points at some technologies which enable students to keep track of their own writing and build a language portfolio.

The software review focus on netTrekker d. i., Thinkronize, Inc., while the book review is on A Practical Guide to Using Technology in Langage Teaching by John de Szendeffy.

CALL BILINGUAL SPANISH-ENGLISH MATTERS

Highly interesting is the site that Elvira Barrios introduces at the Xing Community Internet en el Aula.

It is basically a tool for Spanish teachers of bilingual areas who would like to learn and be able to use the English class language and instructions.

The Spanish name of the site, Sistema de Apoyo al Uso Funcional del Inglés en el Aula Bilingüe SAUFIAB (Supporting system for the Functional use of English at the Bilingual Classroom), describes the functionality of this online language lab.

Different functions are covered throughout the 9 units in which the system is divided: language for social purposes, providing feedback, general movement, grouping students, working with materials, working with resources, developing skills, questioning and control and discipline.

We strongly recommend a visit. It may last a little to download, but then it works fast.
